The Matachines Danza Guadalup group are prepping for their performance at the festival! Get ready to experience traditional Aztec dance and chants!
“Danza Guadalup” is a ministry initiated at Our Lady of Peace (OLP) Catholic Church on December 12, 2017. “Guadalup” refers to the Virgin of the light. Matachines are Chichimec style dancers recognized by their colorful naguillas (skirts), bow/arrow, hand rattler, and traditional dances and drum rhythms. Matachines, in the Aztec (Nahuatl) language means “they who dance”. Matachines dance to venerate the Virgen de Guadalupe who appeared to Juan Diego, an Aztec Indian, in the Valley of Tepeyac, Mexico in 1531. “He is God” and “Viva la Virgin de Guadalupe” are common salutations of the group. |
